As of Jan. 12, the current government shutdown is the longest in United States history. In late 1995, early 1996, there was a government shutdown that lasted 21 days over disagreements between then President Bill Clinton and republicans over public health, Medicare, education and the environment. The current shutdown is now over 30 days. The longer this shutdown continues the more it will start to play a role in the lives of everyday Americans. From travel (TSA), to farmers (USDA), to tax returns (IRS), the impact will be felt at some point by Americans, not to mention all the federal government employees currently not receiving a paycheck.
This shutdown comes down to one major issue, illegal immigration. President Trump would like to see his campaign promise to build a wall or barrier along the southern border come to fruition, in an effort to curb illegal immigration, and he is refusing to sign any continuing spending resolution that doesn’t include funds to build said wall. Democrats in congress refuse to include funding for the wall.
