Shirley Bernice Carter
Shirley Bernice (Cookie) Carter, died July 31, 2011. Mrs. Carter was born July 9, 1963 in Baxley to Janie C. Fletcher and the late James Otis Fletcher, Sr. She was a faithful and dedicated church and choir member at St. Paul C.O.G.I.C. and a proud member of the Long Riders Bike Club. Mrs. Carter loved spending time with her family and friends, and traveling with her husband and bike club members around the world. Cookie was a loving and caring person who will be greatly missed. Her father, James Otis Fletcher and a sister, Clara Byrd, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Elder Lee Norris Carter of Baxley; her mother, Janie C. Fletcher of Graham; grandpa, Ellis Fields of Graham; daughters, Ninita Shawntae Fletcher of Hazlehurst and Erica (Ricardo) Williams of Atlanta; sons, Demetris and Denorris Carter of Baxley; godchildren, Englynn and Anthony Dent of Baxley; grandchildren, Kaniya Fletcher, Keiara Mitchell, Ju’Quan Williams and Zanorriya Carter; five sisters, Carolyn (Henry) Fletcher-Josey of Hazlehurst, Jessie Fletcher, Willette L. McCall of Graham, Cathy (Henry) Ryals, Jr. of Baxley and Joyce (John) Davis of Hampton; two brothers, Allen (Bernadette) Cray and James O. (Gloria) Fletcher, Jr. of Baxley; four aunts, Mazie Vann of Hazlehurst, Jenette Fields of Charlotte, N.C. , Willie Pearl (James) Copeland and Lizzie Paulk of Baxley; one uncle, Kadio Fields of Graham; also many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends also survive.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6 at St. Paul Church of God in Christ in Surrency with Elder Bryan Holmes presiding, Dorothy Gardner and Supt. James Frank Carter giving expressions and the eulogy given by Bishop Benjamin Payne Collins. Interment followed in Morgan Chapel Cemetery in Graham.
Active pallbearers were Reggie Jones, Jerry Howard, Wayne Clinton, Arnold Stephens, Michael Moore and Alnorris Butler.
Honorary pallbearers were Elder Norris and Gail Williams, Elder Leonard and Charlotte Gibbs, Elder Christopher and Natasha Clemons, Elder Henry and Juanetta Knox, Elder Bryan and Demetria Holmes, Elder Roger and Rovenia Shell and Long Riders Motorcycle Club.
Musical selections were rendered by Alecka Lucky and a combined choir.
Arrangements were under the direction of Baxley Funeral Home.
