Many people are faced with the daunting task of trying to keep cool during the summer months as temperatures during this time of year continue to rise. Thermometers seem to be working over-time and everybody intends to remain indoors between mid-morning and late afternoon if at all possible or, at best, until after sundown. With the school year having concluded in most areas by the middle of June, communities are often faced with another type “heat” that is also difficult to control. A break from the rather intense schedule maintained during school sessions often leaves young children, adolescents and young adults caught in the void between complacency and sheer boredom.
In years past, the summer months were set aside as a time when youth would take on seasonal jobs, find work on farms (that are now ever-diminishing), or even come up with innovative ways on their own to earn an income. School-age youngsters would have an opportunity to work throughout the summer. They’d utilize that time away from their studies to make money that could then be used for the purpose of purchasing clothes and supplies for the coming school year.
