Carlene Francis Carter, 85, of Odum, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 in the Appling Healthcare System. Carlene Francis was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Toombs County to the late Charlie Wesley Williams and the late Dosie Yawn Williams. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Wayne County. Mrs. Carter was a retired teacher from the Appling County Board of Education and a member of the Appling County Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed quilting.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and George Stevens of Odum; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Ann Carter of Odum; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Palmer and Helen Williams and Twiggs and Nellie Williams, all of Lyons; five grandchildren, Alan, Jason and Aaron Carter, Dennis and Zane Stevens; and eight great-grandchildren, Zack and Madison Harrell, Olivia Carter, Wesley, Keslyn and John Thomas Carter, Kaydence and Ally-Bree Stevens.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 22 in the chapel of Swain Funeral Home with the Revs. Carlton Rowell and Phillip O’Steen officiating. Interment followed in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Wayne County.
Active pallbearers were Alan Carter, Jason Carter, Aaron Carter, Dennis Stevens, Zane Stevens and Wesley Carter.
Honorary pallbearers were Retired Educators of Appling County.
Musical selections were rendered by the Rev. Carlton Rowell.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
