News-Banner earns first place award for coverage
Editor and Publisher Jamie Gardner is excited to announce that the The Baxley News-Banner has won first place in the National Newspaper Association’s (NNA) Better Newspaper Contest category for Best Investigative or In-Depth Story or Series. Gardner received notification from the national association on July 19.
The announcement letter states that, “As a winner, you can take pride in the fact that The Baxley News-Banner has been judged by its peers among other entrants and selected to join the roll of this year’s award-winning newspapers in this national contest. Winners reflect the high quality of publications represented by the association.”
The News-Banner submitted an entry in the above-mentioned category with regard to its 2010 coverage of the Appling County School System.
The judges commented, “Excellent coverage of school board corruption. Coverage such as this is necessary to inform the community and make informed decisions possible.”
“I am just ecstatic about this announcement,” said Gardner. “It has been at least 15 to 20 years since this newspaper won a National Newspaper Association Award; and to win first place in this particular category makes me even more excited.
I want to thank the staff of The News-Banner for their hard work and dedication to this business and to the people of this community.
The staff and I also want to thank the community for its continued support of this publication.”
There were over 2,000 entries entered in this year’s contest. Only nine awards were given to Georgia newspapers in NNA’s Better Newspaper Contest. California had the most combined wins with 90, followed by New Mexico with 72 and Wyoming with 52.
