During the regularly scheduled meeting of the Appling County Board of Commissioners held on July 19 the commissioners discussed the issue of using Lake Mayers for irrigation. County manager Lee Lewis stated that according to the minutes from a meeting from 1981, a letter was sent to the commissioners addressing the issue and stated that Lake Mayers was to be used primarily for recreational use. Lewis also informed the commissioners that the letter also told that if Lake Mayers was not used primarily for public recreational use then the grants issued to Appling County to construct Lake Mayers would be subject to be repaid. The final information shared from the letter was that it would be considered safe to irrigate from Lake Mayers as long as the level remained at or above 208 ft. above sea level, which is when water is flowing over the lake spillway.
Commissioners vote to regulate irrigation from Lake Mayers
A motion was made by commissioner Charlie Leggett to not allow irrigation from Lake Mayers below the 208-foot level effective later this year. A second was made by commissioner Sarah Boatright with the motion being approved on a split vote with commissioners Leggett, Boatright, Ronnie Rentz and Theodore Wilkerson voting in favor and commissioner Jasper Tomberlin voting against.
Other business
The Commissioners voted unanimously to revoke the county burn ban as the Georgia Forestry Commission is ready to now issue burn permits to local citizens.
The current members of the Workforce Investment Board and of the DFCS board were reapproved by all Commissioners.
Lewis informed the commissioners that work on the Zoar Road Bridge, which is to be done by the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is not scheduled to begin until Fall 2012. After some discussion, Lewis stated he would contact the Georgia DOT to see if there was anyway to patch the bridge to get it open until work is scheduled to begin.
The Commissioners received quotes for the purchase of a new lawn mower for the lake and park, but due to the item not being listed on the agenda the item was tabled to the next meeting, which is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26 at 4:00 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex.
